Improvement of Rangeland in Pastoral Areas (IRPA) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable rangeland management, livestock development, and market access for pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Tanzania.
Established in response to the growing challenges facing rangelands and pastoral livelihoods, IRPA works with communities, government institutions, development partners, research organizations, and the private sector to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that enhance ecosystem health, livestock productivity, and economic resilience.
Pastoral communities play a vital role in Tanzania’s economy, culture, and food systems. However, they increasingly face challenges such as rangeland degradation, climate change, recurrent droughts, livestock diseases, limited market opportunities, and inadequate access to essential services. IRPA seeks to address these challenges through evidence-based interventions that strengthen community resilience and promote sustainable natural resource management.
Guided by its Strategic Plan, IRPA implements programmes under three Strategic Pillars:
- Sustainable Rangeland Management – promoting the restoration, conservation, and sustainable use of rangeland ecosystems.
- Livestock Development – improving livestock productivity, animal health, nutrition, and husbandry practices.
- Market Development – enhancing market access, value addition, entrepreneurship, and income-generating opportunities for pastoral communities.
IRPA is committed to fostering inclusive development by empowering women, youth, and vulnerable groups to actively participate in sustainable economic and environmental initiatives. Through partnerships, innovation, and community engagement, IRPA strives to contribute to resilient livelihoods, healthy ecosystems, and sustainable development in Tanzania’s pastoral areas.
